Dr Robert Chilton
Following the completion of a Ph.D on the London housing market, Bob joined local government, working in planning, housing and chief executives' departments of UK councils. In 1979, he was appointed as Director of Housing and Property Services for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Bob became Assistant Director of South Bank Polytechnic in 1984. In 1986, he became Chief Executive of Gillingham Borough Council and in 1989, he became the Audit Commission’s Local Government Director.
In 1995, on secondment, Bob was Chief Executive of the Local Government Commission, completing the structural review of English councils. Between 1999 and 2001, Bob on secondment, established the Greater London Authority, serving as its inaugural Chief Executive. He is the Vice-Chair of the National Consumer Council until September 2008. In addition, he is Chair of East Thames Group – a major London Housing Association, Deputy Chair of PhonepayPlus, a Non-Executive Director of the Office of the Information Commissioner and a Non-Executive Director of the Waste and Resources Action Programme. He also sits on the Home Office Audit Committee.
